Your Red Wedding Begins Here...

Asian Wedding Tradition and Red Wedding Theme

A wedding color is often chosen for its significance and should not be taken too lightly. For instance, whenever a red wedding is mentioned, most people will associate it to an Asian wedding. This is especially so in Asia which includes countries like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and even Japan.

Red is such an auspicious color which represents ‘luck’ for the Chinese and the old folks won’t be too happy if you don’t include some splashes of ‘red’ in an Asian wedding. In the past, the bride would need to be clad with red cheongsam or tea dress during the tea ceremony. This tradition has been washed down in today’s modernity and contemporary fashion style. Yet, there are many Asian families who still practice the use of red gown or dress in special ceremonies.

But as mentioned in my earlier post, you don’t need to have an Asian wedding to use a red theme for your wedding. Infact, when cleverly used, you can incorporate the red color in many ways such as the tablecloth, candles, napkins, and other decorations. Usually, the bride will change into another gown during the wedding reception so you can pick a red dress for the occasion.

You may choose red wedding flowers for your decorations while mixing them with whites and greens. Otherwise, your bridesmaids may wear a dress with red as the signature shade. Most brides would still prefer to use white for wedding gown and not many would dare break this tradition. Be careful of the shades of white – cool white (slight blue) or warm white (off white). Some may look better in off white tones while others will look stunning in a cool white.

As for your invites, red wedding invitations are rising in popularity so there are many styles to choose from if you are planning for a red wedding. Some white should be avoided on invitations as they tend to associate white with funeral, but this is not necessary so. White is still widely used for wedding decorations or bridal attie. Gold on deep red invitations can be elegant and classy. If you prefer a creative variation, tie a cream colored satin ribbon to add a touch of style to your wedding invitation cards.

In Asian families, chinese couples honor their ancestors with a tea ceremony before the actual wedding reception. This is a beautiful ceremony that is meaningful. It is a time for the wedding couple to show respect to their elders particular their grand parents or parents for their kind upbringing over the years. Monetary gifts and jewelry are usually accompanied during the tea ceremony as the elders bless this beautiful union. For the Asian couple, red is not a color to be omitted whether or not it is a red wedding theme.
